PLAYA DE PANTIN, Galicia – Spain (Sunday, September 16, 2012) – Germany’s Marlon Lipke has won the 2012 ASP 3-Star Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro in a low scoring final at Playa de Pantin over Joan Duru, Bino Lopes and Ty Watson. After yesterday’s completion of the Women’s competition, the Round of 32 of the Men’s re-started this morning in pumping 4-5Ft surf, culminating with the final dominated by Lipke.

Marlon Lipke (DEU) 28, was the first surfer to open fire in the final, starting on a big lefthander out the back and milking it all the way into the shorebreak with a succession of radical turns to earn an 8.33 out of 10 and take the heat lead. In a slow final that only saw one bigger set of waves offered to the four competitors, Lipke seized the opportunity and found the only high scoring ride, clinching the Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro Title in the process.

“I’m just so happy at this stage of my career to have another win, two this year after the 3-Star in Vendee.” Lipke stated. “You know sometimes things happen in life which kind of put your mind right and put things in perspective and sometimes you fight harder for things, that’s what I did here so I’m super happy to come out with the win !”

After surfing and winning four heats today, Lipke looked the sharpest in the final heat of the event, despite suffering a strong pain due to a recurring shoulder injury. Regularly scoring in the excellent range, Lipke has shown consistence through the earlier rounds as well and clinches a logical victory on day 5 of the Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro.

“Four heats and long paddles always, I was getting cramps in my arms at the end, but I fought through it ! I think I know how to win a contest, I kept calm in the end and wanted the first place real bad ! My goal is to try and do the same in Lanzarote at the end of the season !”

Following another win in Vendee at the start of the European season, and more recently an excellent fith place in the ASP 6-Star San Miguel Pro Zarautz, Lipke moves into pole position on the ASP Europe Rankings and sits with a strong lead over closest competitor Charles Martin (GLP). The 2004 European Junior Champion will have to secure a good result in Lanzarote next month to claim his maiden Regional Open Title.

“It’s always stepping stones, I just want to build my comfort zone and then attack again ! I’ve got good boards and my head is in the right place ! I figured it was a slow heat and I had a 5 under my belt and just controlled the peak from there. The other guys paddled inside and I got lucky the bomb came then ! But yeah I played tactics there and it worked out ! I think many people when they come to a final, they kind of crumble, but once you know how to do it you can do it again and yeah experience played a big role in the end I think !”

Joan Duru (FRA) 23, had a stellar run through the entire Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro, netting the second highest single wave score of the event, an excellent 9.33 in his quarter-final bout this afternoon but wasn’t able to keep his momentum going into the final 30-minute exchange today, placing second behind Lipke.

“It was cool, but unfortunately I didn’t find the right waves ! Marlon got the best two so I couldn’t do much but I fell a couple times so he deserves it ! We’ve had excellent waves all week, and unfortunately I broke my best board in my second to last heat so I had to surf a back-up and it wasn’t quite as good but I had a good time here overall ! I’m still super happy with that second place !”

Ranked 44th on the ASP World Rankings before Pantin, Duru has shown once again the strengths of his surfing repertoire in solid surf and adds another strong result in 2012 after placing second in Jeffrey’s Bay this summer, fifth in the Brazilian Prime event of Fernando do Noronha and 9th in Zarautz recently.

Bino Lopes (BRA) 24, clinched the third place today, choosing to stay in the inside witnessing the absence of decent sets during the final. He found a smaller righthander he exploited well, unfortunately not making the last huge re-entry he attempted that could have given him the score needed to move into first place.

“The final was very hard,” Lopes said. “I didn’t get any good waves, and I think it was hard for everyone to stay focused in the heat but I’m so happy to have come here and I hope next year I’ll get an even better result !”

The Brazilian only starting his World Tour campaign internationally, claims here the best result of a young career and proves he has what it takes to make the final in major events, after defeating Top Seeds on his way to the last heat of this competition. Sitting at an average 156th position on the World Rankings, Lopes eyes the Top 100 next season and will be one to follow in the near future.

“This year I had a contusion at my leg, and I missed a couple of events, and this is for sure my best result so far ! I’m going back to Brazil for one event and I’ll come back to Europe for the final competition in Lanzarote. Next year I’m planning on surfing the whole International tour and I’m hoping to get results like this more often !”

Ty Watson (AUS) 22, is the unfortunate fourth placer of the 2012 Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro, and couldn’t really showcase the excellent surfing he has been displaying this whole week, unable to find good enough opportunities in the thirty minutes of his final appearance in Galicia.

“There’s not much I could do, I only got two closeouts, I just couldn’t get a wave really ! There was that one wave that Marlon got and congratulation’s to him he surfed it well. He surfed the whole event well, I’ve been watching his heats.. I suppose everyone will say the same, we were all grovelling and he got that one wave which made the difference !”

After an encouraging 17th place in the Azores last week, the young Australian stepped it up in Pantin, outing several strong opponents to secure his ticket for the final today. The talented regular-footer who has been travelling with his brother Jordin, will have another occasion in a few weeks in Canary Islands to better his fourth place result.

“It’s been really fun, the waves have been amazing and I’ll definitely be back here this time next year ! I needed a good result here to get up there on the rankings, probably a win here, but this is better than getting knocked out first round so I’ll take it and carry on from here ! Making the finals is always good for confidence, and I’ll take it to the Canary Islands for my next event !”

PLAYA DE PANTIN, Galicia – Spain (Saturday, September 15, 2012) – Sage Erickson (USA) 21, has won the ASP 6-Star Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro today in clean 3-4Ft surf at the iconic Playa de Pantin over Alizee Arnaud (FRA) 22. It was a perfect sunny day in Galicia for the women’s finals, culminating this afternoon with the crowning of Erickson in a one-way final she led from start to finish.

Sage Erickson (USA) 21, was on a rampage all-day dominating heat after heat and netting some of the highest scores of the entire event with her aggressive backhand attack. Erickson was rewarded for her perfect timing hitting the lip multiple times in the most critical sections of the waves and claims a logical win in Galicia today.

“This victory feels amazing, coming from California with a win and having so much support there and then coming here and you know the Spanish are so welcoming and their cheers have motivated me throughout the event. I’ve just been thanking God every heat, it’s been challenging conditions and he’s kind of helped me with my wave selection, so I’m just so grateful and excited to be back at number 1 !!”

Erickson started her final bout with the same rythmn she’s be counting on all event, and found a great looking lefthander she exploited all the way to the inside shorebreak. She took an early lead and never let her opponent get back in the game, finding a decent backup quickly after. From then on, Erickson built momentum and ameliorated her scores gradually finding yet another excellent scores over the 8.00 point mark.

“I’ve noticed great competitive surfers, they’ll start their heat strong with some good waves, so I think I just counted on having a quick start and then to build momentum throughout, not be chasing the scores but rather posting them early on.”

Second on the ASP Women’s World Rankings arriving in Pantin, the Ventura local moves ahead of fellow Californian Courtney Conlogue to sit in pole position before the remaining two events of the 2012 season. After a difficult first season amongst the World’s Best where she only once managed to attain the quarter-finals, Erickson has secured her spot into next year’s elite World Championship Tour.

“Courtney is such an amazing competitor and a dear dear friend in California, and you know to be in that number one spot in the World Qualifying series is so amazing, the group of women is so prestigious and to be on top feels amazing ! This is my third year coming to Pantin and it’s been an amazing experience, there’s so much natural beauty here and where I’ve been staying the people have been so welcoming and that’s been wonderful. I love Pantin and Europe and I’m so happy to finally win here !”

Alizee Arnaud (FRA) 22, runner-up of the 2012 Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro, has been quietly advancing through the early rounds of the Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro but was efficient in making the most out of the waves today, assuring her spot in the finals after defeating fellow French competitor Pauline Ado in the quarters and Australia’s Felicity Palmateer in the semis.

“I’m super happy, that’s my best result since my Junior World Title so I’m stoked ! These conditions are not exactly my favourite, kind of fat waves and especially lefts, so I’m even happier to have surfed well in those waves ! I’m used to surf a punchy right at home at the Santocha, a lot hollower, but I’ve been surfing a lot in Hossegor South and it does resemble this !”

Netting her first major result on the Star Tour, Arnaud who was crowned ASP Women’s World Junior Champion two years ago, has stepped up her game in Pantin and gains valuable ranking points to eye her maiden qualification for the ASP Women’s WCT. The talented regular-footer who’s training grounds include the famous French barrel of La Graviere, showed today that her surfing repertoire allows her to rivalize with the World’s Best and will be a force to reckon with in the near-future.

“Qualification and the European Title are my main objectives this year, so I’m looking forward to the last events and I hope I can qualify but also have fun trying to ! I think it’s an advantage to have the last events of the season in Europe cause I have my family and coach following me there and can count on their support which is super important in these deciding events !”

Bianca Buitendag (ZAF) 18, was defeated in the first semi-final of the Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro by event winner the Californian Sage Erickson but clinches her second best result on the Star Tour in 2012 and adds points to an already excellent total towards qualification for the Women’s World Championship Tour next year.

“When I won the Round of 12, I thought ‘anything better than this is just a blessing,’ I’m super stoked to be able to make it all the way to the semis and surf against Sage, she’s been ripping the whole event and it’s been a good final to watch ! I just wanted to surf to my potential without having the nerves and I did it so I’m stoked !”

An outstanding performer all week, Buitendag has displayed a strong forehand surfing in the fun lefts on offer at Playa de Pantin and looks forward to the last two stops of the European leg to show once again that she has what it takes to make it to the Elite Top 17.

“It’s probably the best surf I’ve ever seen in a contest, like 3-4Ft, lefts, running all the way to the shore, we couldn’t have asked for any more !! I told myself, I have two really bad results so in the last three events I want to have two good ones so one under the belt, and out of two events I want one more good one !”

Felicity Palmateer (AUS) 20, places equal third in Pantin and nets her best result so far this season. The young Australian who’s been powersurfing her way into the semi-finals, fell short to an in-form Alizee Arnaud in their 30 minute exchange.

“I’m pretty happy with this result,” Palmateer stated. “I haven’t had that many strong results throughout the year, this is the best so far and I’m happy to have this under my belt and hopefully I can get two more good results in the upcoming two events ! I’ve been to Pantin two times before this and I love it here, it reminds a little bit of home, the coastline, the waves have lots of power, it’s really nice here !”

Currently ranked 18th on the ASP World Rankings before entering the Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro, Palmateer chips in an important 2,080 points to get closer to the Top 10. The last goofy-footer in contention after Buitendag’s loss in semi-final n°1, Western Australia’s Felicity Palmateer felt at ease in the powerful waves of Playa de Pantin and has shown consistence throughout the whole event.

“When I first got down this morning it wasn’t really good on the low tide but when it filled in and got high that left down the beach started to work really well so it ended up being really good ! I think it’s just as much chance either way, but maybe if you’re a natural footer you can hook it under the lip better, I’m not sure.. I think wave selection was a crucial thing, specially cause there are so many closeouts out there you really have to pick the right ones !”

The next call has been set to 11:30am tomorrow for the final day of the men’s event. Conditions are expected to improved with lighter winds and yet another warm and sunny day in Pantin.

PLAYA DE PANTIN, Galicia – Spain (Friday, September 14, 2012) – Clean offshore 2-3Ft lines of swell greeted competitors this morning at the iconic Playa de Pantin, allowing the event to re-start with the remaining four heats of the women’s first round under the Galician sun. The second half of the men’s third round was completed as well and the day continued with the girls round of 12 decided in small but beautiful waves in the afternoon.

Pauline Ado (FRA) 21, was the most in-form surfer today, clinching the highest heat total of both men and women divisions, with a strong backside surf in the one-meter waves of Pantin. The South-West France local opened her account quickly with a 7.83 in the first minutes of her Round 2 bout and backed it up with an even better 8.60 to claim the heat lead and keep it for the remainder of the exchange.

“It was kind of an ideal one for me,” Ado said. “I started with two good waves pretty quickly so I felt a little relieved afterwards. From then on I was mostly surfing for fun, I didn’t manage to ameliorate my two best scores but it felt great to have a heat where you’re not chasing scores and actually appreciate it. The sandbank is really good and the lefts were fun, but the wind made it hard to select them cause when you start you never really know what’s coming ! There’s a little bit of luck involved I guess, and with four surfers out it’s not easy !”

Ado, the first European to re-qualify through the WCT last year has had a more difficult second season and needs a big performance in Pantin to stay in the elite Top 17 in 2013. With four equal 5th finishes in the 6-Star events this season, Ado will try to break that invisible quarter-final barrier that has kept her from accessing the finals.

“I did have a difficult year on the CT, but I’m learning from my losses and I hope to finish strong in the back-half of the year to requalify. I have a pretty bad result I need to drop and with these three remaining events I can hope to better my situation. I have to admit I’m not too focused on the rankings calculating everything because I don’t want to put that extra pressure on myself !”

A former European Junior Champion, and the 2009 ASP Women’s Junior World Champion, Pauline Ado has built a strong experience of competition and has an extensive knowledge of the European events she has been entering since her teenage years. Ado will be counting on using that experience when competition resumes tomorrow to try and claim her first major win on the Star Tour.

“Events like Pantin and Estoril, Pantin even more actually, I’ve been coming to compete since I was like 13-14 years old the first time, we used to have European events here. To be familiar with the people we see every year is definitely a plus, and we usually have family or sponsors around so it is an advantage I think !”

Sofia Mulanovich (PER) 29, put on a great show this afternoon in her second round heat moving into the Round of 12 and joining fellow World Championship Tour surfer Jacqueline Silva (BRA). Mulanovich who chose the far western peak of the beach in Pantin, found a couple of excellent lefts peeling all the way to the shorebreak.

“I feel good, I got a couple of fun waves finally, and my boards are feeling good so I’m confident for the next heat !” Mulanovich stated. “I got an 8, it felt good you know, after you get that score you kind of feel like, not relaxed, but you do feel more confident about your surfing and your performance ! I was stoked to make it, I need the points, so I’m keeping positive and I hope for the next ones !”

Celebrating her 10th year on the WCT, the 2004 ASP Women’s World Champion finds herself in a difficult position trying to requalify through the Star events, but the consistence she has shown throughout her career is a definite weapon towards requalification. With already two excellent results under her belt in 2012, Mulanovich will need a couple more strong performances to secure her spot at the Elite level.

“I missed an event on the CT where I was injured, I didn’t have the best time this season, but it’s all good it’s just experience and it motivates me even more for this contest ! I still got a 3rd at home, and a 2nd in the Australian Open so I need to keep up, be consistent and try to get more points here !”

Alana Blanchard (HAW) 22, also made her way into the third round of competition at the Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro advancing ahead of Californian Sage Erickson and eliminating fellow Hawaiian Alessa Quizon in the process. A former World Championship Tour surfer as well, Blanchard is sitting right below the qualification zone but could see a couple of good results in the European summer leg propel her back into the Top 17.

“I felt like I wasn’t getting the right waves, but I got some fun ones and it’s a really nice place here so I’m stoked. This is my third time in Pantin and my best result so far so I love it ! I’ve been on the CT two times and have fallen off, but it’s not that big of a deal to me, you know I’m having fun doing the Star events as well as the CT and doing trips with Rip Curl, so either way it’s good !”

Carlo Zapata (PER) 18, opened today’s proceedings in the men’s division with a win over recent winner of the Boardmasters Charles Martin (GLP). The young Peruvian surfed the best wave of their exchange and scored an impressive 8.00 point ride with a combination of strong turns on his backhand.

“Today’s heat was a hard one,” Zapata said. “Everyone was surfing very good, and I think what helped me to get through that one was stategy.. I’m pretty happy to get that 8.00 in the heat and a 5 something. The waves are not the best today, but you know it’s the same for everybody !”

A new face on the international scene and for his first appearance in Pantin, Zapata surfed a smart heat and put on a strong display of powersurfing on the little lefts breaking in front of the judges tower. With only limited experience in competition, Zapata wasn’t impressed by his opponents and stayed focused on the task at hand when it mattered the most.

“The frenchy guy tried to hassle me with that wave, but I didn’t let go because I knew that was an amazing one ! I caught it and concentrated on surfing it well, did a couple snaps and rollers, a good combination of manoeuvers and it felt good ! I’m feeling pretty confident right now, and we’ll see how it goes in the next ones !”

Nathan Hedge (AUS) 33, was another standout today at Playa de Pantin, netting the day’s second highest heat total with an aggressive frontside attack on the main lefthander peak. The ‘Hog’ who has just re-started to travel the qualifying series across the globe showed today he is still a strong competitor in all conditions.

“I really enjoyed my heat you know, I’ve been coming to Pantin for a lot of years so I was excited to come back !” Hedge stated. “I picked fun lefthanders in the corner, really nice ! I sat a little bit wide from the other guys, because I knew the left is really quick and I thought well don’t hassle, just try and surf the wave you know.. I’ve been coming before I qualified for the CT, I did well, and the Australians always come here. There’s been some big righthanders in the corner, and I’ve probably been here like ten times, so I don’t remember my best result but I always enjoyed it !”

At age 33, Hedge who spent a few years on the ASP World Championship Tour and placed in the Top 10 successively in 2004 and 2005, took a break from competition in the past couple of years and is only just starting competing again. Accompanying and coaching younger surfers like Australia’s Stu Kennedy, Hedge has been kept in the loop and looked sharp in his first appearances in Europe so far.

“I started halfway through the year in Africa, so I’m just chipping away my ranking cause I was at 250, and I just enjoy being back ! I had a good ninth place in the Prime in Ballito and I’ve just been really happy to be back on the tour. It’s good to be travelling with younger guys too, it keeps it fresh, and keeps me open minded to try new things, and lets me know what these kids are doing as well ! Aerial game ? Definitely trying a few, it’s not my biggest weapon right now, but I’m started to do a couple reverses etc, I think power’s still my game but I enjoy the airs also !”

The next call has been set to 12pm tomorrow for the final day of the women’s event that will see the 2012 ASP 6-Star Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro champion crowned in the afternoon ! The men’s event will recommence on Sunday in Pantin.

PLAYA DE PANTIN, Galicia – Spain (Thursday, September 13, 2012) – Competition recommenced this morning with the men in good 4-5Ft surf at Playa de Pantin before moving into the women’s 6-Star event later this afternoon. Strong performances were witnessed in both divisions with the top seeds entering the event at this stage, but it was the girls who put on an impressive show this afternoon with some solid maneuvers in pumping surf.

Sage Erickson (USA) 21, was on fire in her opening heat of the Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro, surfing a near-perfect wave rewarded a 9.33 out of 10 and netting the highest heat total of the first round in the process. With two solid scores under the belt, Erickson left her three opponents in a combination zone, needing two scores to try and claim the heat.

“My first heat went really well today, and I’ve just been really excited to get out and get a jersey on,” Erickson stated. “The conditions were a little bit smaller earlier on while practising and it’s picked up a bit, and it’s the first time we’ve had some real swell on the Star tour this year besides Margaret River, so it feels good to be in some power !”

On a roll from her last three events in Peru and California where she placed fifth twice and won the last one, Erickson used her lethal backhand attack on the bigger sets at Playa de Pantin, and looked at ease in a bumpy lineup. After a succession of events run in small conditions, the Ventura local was happy to get some bigger walls to exploit in Pantin.

“Coming from California I’m quite used to that windy kind of smaller beachbreak conditions,” reflected Erickson. “But at home in Ventura we have some really good pointbreaks, and further north there’s some more powerful waves. I think when I was younger I kind of forced myself to go out when it was a bit bigger, and I was scared just for little moments like this when there’s a bit more size out in the water, so I feel confident here and it’s my third year so I’m really excited to try and get on the podium here in Europe. My first heat was kind of a blurr in my head, just because I was pretty focused and a bit anxious to get that first heat out of the way, but I think my 9.33 I had an OK first turn and a strong second turn on the close-out. I can’t remember it that well but I think the judges seemed to like it with that score so I’m excited !”

Sitting in 13th position at the end of the 2012 Women’s WCT season, Erickson had to go back to the qualifying events to try to maintain her spot in the elite ASP Top 17. With already four solid results under the belt, the talented natural-footer needs to better a Round of 24 loss to ameliorate her situation and with the confidence she displayed today in Pantin, she will be a favourite when competition resumes tomorrow.

“I definitely didn’t finish where I would have liked to on my first year on the WCT,” Erickson said. “You know I think I’ve been learning so much in trying to find the balance with equipment and just the physical attributes it takes to be a World Tour surfer and the Star tour is kind of a building block and somewhere where I’m looking to requalify for the CT, and right now it’s looking really good so I’m really happy closing up my events here in Europe !”

Georgia Fish (AUS) 19, displayed a great deal of confidence and power in the windy, shifting 4Ft peaks of Playa de Pantin and surfed a solid heat to claim one of today’s highest combined heat totals of 15.10. Opening the show in the women’s division in heat 1, she advanced ahead of current Women’s World Championship Tour surfer Jacqueline Silva (BRA).

“I’ve been quite sick so I haven’t given myself much of an expectation for this contest,” Fish stated. “I’m trying to have a more relaxed approach so I’m really happy to have such a good heat ! I’ve been here for a few days, and we’ve surfed Valdovino and had a drive around, to see Cedeira and everything and I really like it here. It’s beautiful, and a lot like where I grew up in Victoria. My goal coming here is to try and get consistent in heats, and I’ll be pretty happy with that !”

Bianca Buitendag (ZAF) 18, who ha s had a stellar year so far on the Star Tour as well as the Pro Junior series of both Europe and her home country of South-Africa, demonstrated again she’s one of the strongest up-and-comers in 2012, scoring the second highest single wave score of the day, an impressive 8.67 out of 10.

“I was super nervous,” started Buitendag. “I don’t know why, maybe just thinking about it too much, but it does it all the time, the first heat is always either way, so it’s good to have it under the belt ! I started the heat pretty bad but finally managed to get one that went all the way to the inside, did a couple turns on it and got a good score !”

Buitendag, sitting in fifth on the ASP Women’s World Tour rankings, is virtually qualifying for next year’s Top 17, and will be looking to replace two low results to solidify her position. In a dominant form all year, the talented goofy-footer from the South-Coast has just qualified for the World Junior Championships and will be a favourite in Bali next month when the event starts.

“We had one pro junior event in South-Africa about a week ago where I got first, and my friend Sarah and I qualified to go to Bali which is after the last event here, so it’s going to be a busy schedule next month ! I’m focusing on the Star Tour more, and World Juniors is to top it off, to go to Bali I mean, who doesn’t want to go to Bali !”

Bino Lopes (BRA) 24, led the men’s division and found the highest score of the day in a complicated line-up, an excellent 8.33 out of 10 earned with a combination of powerful top turns just under the lip of a beautiful running lefthander. Lopes, who has had a difficult start to his European campaign hopes to better or equal his best result in 2012 so far, in Pantin.

“It was a good heat for me,” Lopes stated. “I had some good waves, and specially that left I had my 8.33 on, I’m super happy and I hope tomorrow I can make some more heats ! That left was amazing, I made a good first turn, then a snap right under the lip and another couple of big turns so it was a really fun wave !”

After a good 2011 season that saw the young Brazilian win a 2-Star event at home and place 5th in the 6-Star of Rio de Janeiro, Lopes has been collecting first round defeats and will be out to regain momentum from his Pantin good start.

“I feel like I haven’t had the best luck in the previous events, like in the Azores where my opponent got a wave in the last 10 seconds and got the score he needed to pass ahead of me. But that’s competition, and I’m staying focused and positive here and I hope I’ll make more heats ! This year I’ve missed a few events due to a leg injury and I hope I can get a couple results by the end of this season.”

Local hero Gony Zubizarreta (ESP) 27, qualified for the third round of competition placing second to Messias Felix (BRA), and advancing ahead of another young talent Dimitri Ouvre from the French Island of Guadeloupe. With an exhaustive knowledge of the area and a strong experience of competition, Zubizarreta managed to make his way through a tough first heat today.

“It was pretty hard at the beginning there,” Zubizarreta said. “I couldn’t find a decent wave and Messias was ripping. I was thinking if I found the wave I could get a score in these conditions, and I caught that good left and got that 7.10 with a small backup. At the end Dimitri was needing a 6 and I knew he’s a really good surfer and could get the score easily so I tried to keep him off of the good ones !”

The next call has been set to 10am tomorrow morning for both men and women competitors. Depending on conditions on offer at Playa de Pantin, event officials will decide the day’s program.

PLAYA DE PANTIN, Galicia – Spain (Wednesday, September 12, 2012) - Day 1 of the Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro started this morning in clean 2-3Ft waves at the iconic Playa de Pantin. The ASP 3-Star Men’s event opened proceedings today with the Round of 112 and twelve heats of the Round of 96 completed in the afternoon.

Fresh off his inaugural Star Tour win in Azores, Messias Felix (BRA) 26 confirmed his excellent form winning his first heat in Pantin and clinching the highest combined heat total of the day. With added confidence brought back from Sao Miguel, Felix went on to surf an explosive heat and found great scoring opportunities on the long running lefts of Playa de Pantin.

“I just want to keep surfing like I did last week,” Felix started. “My body feels great, I’ve been suffering from a back injury for the last four years and I’m not feeling the pain anymore at the moment, I enjoy surfing so much more ! You never know about tomorrow so I just want to keep having fun !”

Skyrocketed into the 68th spot on the ASP World Rankings, Felix comes to Galicia with hopes of another great result to solidify his status of rising Brazilian force. At ease on a long lefthander with a wall allowing multiple turns, Felix found quickly his rythmn to take the heat lead and keep it through to remainder of the 20-minute exchange.

“It’s a lot different and the water is a little cold here,” Felix said. “The waves are always changing, I caught some good lefts in this heat, but I think if the swell builds we may see some great rights tomorrow.. After my win last week, I believe a lot more in myself and I’ll advance heat by heat knowing I have something to do here.”

Vicente Romero (ESP) 20, put on a great show today in his Round of 96 bout, finding an excellent score of 8.83 out of 10 in the first few minutes, quickly backed up with a decent second wave. Leading the heat well ahead of his opponents, the young Spanish started trying airs in the inside section of the wave, making it interesting for the crowd sitting on the hill in front of the main peak.

“I had a good heat, with a lot of waves coming.” Romero said. “Dimitri was surfing another peak so it was just three of us out there, and it was easier to get waves. In the first minutes I found my 8.83 so after that I was a lot more relaxed all the heat. I tried to do a couple airs, I just had fun, the conditions are good and I think it’s only going to get better !”

Romero, who finished his 2012 European Junior season ranked third, has just started competing in the Star events and seems to have a hard time acclimating to the next level. With a diverse surfing repertoire that includes powersurfing as well as progressive aerial manoeuvers, the twenty-year old has got all the talent required and will now need to find his rythmn amongst older and more experienced competitors.

“I surfed in Lacanau, Zarautz and Azores so far, and in all three events I didn’t get good results, only passed one heat. I want to try and surf the whole Star Tour, even though it’s pretty tough without sponsors, so my objective is to get a good result in the upcoming World Junior Finals and try to find a sponsor then, to be able to do the full tour next year.”

Gordon Fontaine (GBR) 22, also had a good start to his Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro campaign today, winning his heat and making his way into the Top 3 scorers of the competition so far. The talented regular-footer originating from Britanny has found similarities with his homebreak and acclimated perfectly to the Pantin line-up founding the waves with the most potential for scores.

“I had a hard time at the beginning there, but then I caught a first wave scored 5 something and it got me into it.” Fontaine said. “Then I got that bomb, and I tried both to surf safely and not fall but at the same time I wanted to score good.. It was a really good left and I was right in the spot. I had to paddle hard to get it and I thought I might want to keep some energy for the wave, but I got it ! I took off, and did like a first good roller and a floater, and a few turns then, it’s pretty long !”

After a promising 13th place in the opening European Star event of 2012, Fontaine had a few close calls but never managed to get through heats in the major events of the summer-leg. Sitting in 31st position on the European rankings before the Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro, Fontaine will have the opportunity in Pantin to ameliorate his situation with a good result.

“My season has been pretty bad so far, in all events recently I lost in the first round, sometimes it was very close, but in the end it just makes me hungry for heat wins ! I know I’m not here to qualify or anything, but I’d like to get some experience, surf against good surfers, get the scores and win a little money in the process, that’s pretty much why I’m here so it feels good to get through that one !”

Perth Standlick (AUS) 22, was another standout today scoring an impressive 8.00 out of 10 for a combination of powerful gauges on a beautiful left in the opening heats of the Round of 96. After his second place in Zarautz, Standlick had a shocking first round elimination in Azores last week, and is out to regain confidence in the water in Pantin.

“Even though I just won, I still feel I had a shocker !” Standlick stated. “I was struggling at the beginning of the heat to find a decent wave, and then I went to my plan B and it ended up being better ! Plan B was to sit and wait for the lefts, not even go near anyone on the rights and just do my own thing.. It’s a pretty fun left but it’s a little bit fat, so you got to really pick the right one that’s going to stand up !”

Conditions are expected to ameliorate tomorrow with a bigger swell, and event officials have decided to reconvene at 10am to decide on the day’s schedule !

Playa de Pantin, Galicia – Spain (Tuesday, September 11, 2012) - Event n°6 of 7 on the Men’s European schedule and the first of a three-stop Women’s leg, the Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro will start tomorrow at the iconic Playa de Pantin, Galicia – Spain. An extraordinary edition for the 25th anniversary of the event awaits competitors and surfing enthusiasts alike.

More than 150 surfers will attend the event this year, including some of the World’s best athletes who have been supporting the Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro throughout the years. With a promising forecast for the week, everything’s set for another exciting event to come.

“Pantin is a classic event every year,” Rob Gunning, ASP Europe’s Tour Manager stated. “It’s always a great experience for everyone travelling to Galicia, the Pantin area is a really beautiful place and waves often get excellent ! This year’s European Title race has been exciting so far and I’m looking forward to see it get shaken up again in Pantin this week.”

Third to last event on the International calendar, the ASP 6-Star Women’s Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro will be decisive for the girls trying to qualify for the elite ASP Women’s World Championship Tour in 2013. With only three events remaining, it’s make-or-brake time for all aspiring pro-surfers, and Pantin will host some of the World’s top talents in the hunt for precious ranking points.

“The girls are always enthusiastic about our European leg of events,” Gunning said. “This year we’ll have six World Championship Tour surfers joining us in Pantin and a handful of young up-and-comers looking for their first big result, another Tour victory, or the amount of points they require to qualify. It’s always an exciting end of the season in Europe which decides who we’ll see join the ASP Top 17 in 2013.”

One of the oldest surfing competitions in Europe, the Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro wil celebrate its 25th anniversary this year with a busy entertainment program besides the main ASP event. Surf lessons, beach rugby, football and volley-ball games, art exhibitions and a special musical evening will complete this year’s schedule of the Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro.

“It is an honor to organize the 25th edition of the Pantin Classic, especially considering the number of events that have suffered from the crisis.” Marcos Rodriguez, co-organizer of the event said. “If it wasn’t for the support we are getting from our sponsors, we could never celebrate the 25th Cabreiroá Pantin Classic Pro.. I’ll tell you a little secret, we are preparing a big party at Reina Sofia Park in Ferrol and singer Vega Cordoba will perform in a free concert on Saturday, after the women’s final.”

CAPBRETON, France (Tuesday, April 30, 2012) – One of the most prestigious events of the ASP European Tour, the Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro, will return in 2012 and celebrate its 25th anniversary at the iconic ‘Playa de Pantin’ Galicia with an ASP 6-Star Women and 3-Star Men’s event. Miguel Galeiras and Marcos Rodriguez co-organizers of the event have confirmed both events will be held this season with their continuing support of men’s as well as women’s professional surfing in Europe.

«The Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro for many years has supported women’s surfing because we consider that it is put to one side by the surfing industry and what we need to support is equality in sport», stated Galeiras. «Especially when dealing with an event or a World circuit where the entire world is watching the image we are giving of ourselves. The Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro will continue in it’s venture in the future and we hope it is an example to everyone.»

There has been a lot of changes made since the inaugural edition of the Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro in 1987 but the goal has remained to showcase the best of surfing and the incredible potential the region of Galicia has to offer. 2012 will come to confirm that Playa de Pantin deserves its spot on the ASP World Tour European leg and organizers have been working hard to make this year count.

«To tell you the truth we feel a little nervous because it is a great responsibility organising this edition but at the same time it has filled us with a sense of pride and we hope the original founders of the Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro see in this edition their dream arrive to a consolidated future and that we are up to the standards they originally imagined for the event», Rodriguez said. «The Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro is the surfing event that represents Galicia to the rest of the world. Each year the people from Galicia host a world tour event through this emblematic event which shows us as a people, committed, consistent and lovers of the sea each year no matter what happens.»

As part of the European Tour, Pantin will once again host some of the World’s best surfers male and female, and an ASP event is always a great occasion for the local surfing community to learn from the best. In all events, Wildcards are allocated to potential future stars of the sport, and Pantin will be no exception.

«In all editions of the Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro we invite to both categories young up-and-coming surfers from Galicia. This year we can announce that Yolanda Rodriguez in the women’s event will repeat her presence and for the men’s event we are yet to decide. We will let you know.»

Miguel Galeiras and Marcos Rodriguez will once again put all efforts in making the Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro a public-friendly event with entertainment aside the main ASP surfing event. They have been pushing towards a great week of fun and sports in Galicia for all the September tourists and regional enthusiasts, with free surfing lessons by the local surfing school, beach football & rugby tournaments as well as concerts and food on-site.

«It is well known that this event has always been very family orientated and we want to thank the efforts of all the people, sponsors and Government bodies who colaborate with the Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro. Without their help and support it would be impossible to get the event up and running. And finally this edition of the Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro is dedicated to Javier Porta who sadly has left us forever but who has left a path that many of us will follow.»

The 2012 Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro will run from September 12-16 in Playa de Pantin, Galicia.
